In August 2013, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Vienna, VA third on its list of the 100 best places to live in the United States. In addition to highly ranked public schools, its advantages include a downtown with many small businesses, a Washington Metro station with large parking garages just south of the town, and a portion of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park hiker/biker trail cutting through the center of the town. Tysons Corner a residential and shopping district is close to Vienna, as is Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.

Vienna was awarded the Silver Certificate from the Virginia Municipal League’s 2013 Green Government Challenge at the VML Annual Conference in Arlington for the emissions reducing efforts made by the Town.

The green efforts highlighted by the award included strong waste management, land-use and transportation policies, high community participation and involvement, and innovative programs that support a greener community including the community garden project at Vienna Elementary School, the annual Vienna Green Expo, the Sustainable Home and Garden tour, the Green Homes Initiative, the Green Business Recognition Award, leaf mulching and delivery, purchasing local organic projects, creating green gardens, and recycling options. Town employees have also implemented a number of on-the-job green programs such as office paper recycling, use of earth-friendly cleaning products and purchase of hybrid vehicles.
