Rockville, along with neighboring Gaithersburg and Bethesda, is at the core of the Interstate 270 Technology Corridor, which is home to numerous software and biotechnology companies as well as several federal government institutions. The city also has several upscale regional shopping centers and is one of the major retail hubs in Montgomery County.

Rockville is closely associated with the neighboring towns of Kensington and North Bethesda. The Music Center at Strathmore, an arts and theater center, opened in February 2005, located next to the Grosvenor Metro Station, and is presently the second home of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville Civic Center Park has provided diverse entertainment since 1960.

The Red Line of the Washington Metro rail system services the Rockville, Twinbrook, and White Flint stations. Located at the same facility as the Rockville metro station, Rockville Station on the Brunswick Line of the MARC commuter rail system runs to and from Washington, DC. Amtrak provides intercity train service to Rockville as well.

At the heart of Rockville residents can find the 12-acre Rockville Town Square. Rockville Town Square is the kind of development that “new urbanism” fans will enjoy. The developers succeeded in creating a mix of retail, restaurants, residences, and public space while maintaining a focus on pedestrian traffic. On a warm afternoon, the plaza at the center of the community is full of playing kids, shoppers, diners, and businesspeople. The three square blocks that make up the area are attractive and bustling with people unlike anywhere else in town. The plaza in the center features a covered gazebo and a fountain, both of which are a big hit with kids. The library located at one side of the plaza is humming with users, and outdoor tables at various lunch establishments are full of diners.

Unfortunately for the developer of Rockville Town Square, the area was built just before the housing downturn. That has created a silver lining for potential residents, however. The condo and apartment units are priced well and come equipped with community amenities like swimming pools and fitness centers, as well as the features that have become expected in units built in the past 5 to 7 years, including granite countertops, maple cabinets, and hardwood floors.

Most of the residents of Rockville will mention convenience as one of the reasons they chose to live there. From Rockville Metro station, the trip on the Red Line to Metro Center takes roughly 30 minutes. Montgomery County Ride On buses also run through the area, easily connecting it with Bethesda and Silver Spring. But many residents still drive. Rockville is located very close to I-270 and the Beltway.
