McLean is located between the George Washington Parkway and the town of Vienna. McLean is known for its many upscale homes, private communities, and it’s proximity to high-end shopping, such as at the nearby Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria.

McLean is home to many diplomats, members of Congress, and high-ranking government officials partially due to its proximity to Washington, D.C. and the Central Intelligence Agency. McLean is the location of Hickory Hill, the former home of Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy. It is also the home of numerous figures from American politics and government including former Vice-President Dick Cheney, U.S. Army General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell, U.S. Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy and Antonin Scalia, and U.S. Senators Byron Dorgan, Patrick Leahy, and Don Nickles. The community received its name, McLean, from John Roll McLean, the former publisher and owner of The Washington Post.

McLean is located inside the beltway, but still maintains a rural suburban feel. It is very convenient to many other areas in the DC Metro area with an easy commute to both Washington, DC and parts of Maryland. With a population of 48,115 residents, McLean is the 19th largest community in Virginia. A combination of excellent schools, low crime rates, strong support for education, and a high rate of home ownership in predominantly single-family properties make McLean a very sought after area to live.

Although the majority of commuting trips in McLean are made by automobile, McLean is somewhat unusual for a town of its size for having a substantial number of people who use public transportation. For many people, the subway helps to get to and from their jobs every morning, which benefits everyone in the McLean area by reducing both traffic and air pollution.

McLean offers a variety of sports and recreational facilities, including major parks, recreation centers, golf courses, and nature and historical sites. The area has developed a 40 year development plan which will transform the area into a walkable, sustainable, urban community over the next few decades.
